Exhaust y-pipe install - 1969 f100 360, AT

Post by ajboots4 »

Can I get some suggestions on how to install the exhaust Y-pipe? Seems like the transmission crossmember and the starter motor should be removed to be able to get the Y-pipe in there. Unfortunately I don’t have the benefit of a lift while I’m doing this.

My Edsel is really low and so are a couple other of my projects so what I did was use regular car ramps and place a long chain on both ramps from the little hole in the front of the ramps to the front bottom of the rear wheels. Drive your vehicle, I know it will be loud, on the chains and they will pull the ramps or hold them in place while the front wheels roll onto the upper bowls of the ramps. I know it's a poor mans fix but it works and is safe. The ramps hold fast and won't run away on you. Y-pipes are my preference of pipes for the 360, single exhaust out the right rear of your vehicle. Sounds great, performance shouldn't change.

I did mine with the truck setting on the ground.....put a floor jack under the transmission, dropped the transmission crossmember and I can't remember for sure but I don't think I took the starter out - been 4 years ago and getting old so I don't remember as well as I used to.....

I believe you should be able to get it in there by removing the transmission crossmember alone and leaving the starter in.

Thanks all. It’s happening as soon as the rain stops.

I know this is a few months old but I'm trying to do the same....remove/replace the Y-pipe.
Hoping the OP sees this. Though I have a manual transmission...Was removing the trans crossmember the way to go?
