Oil for a rebuilt 390

I just had my 1970 3/4 ton’s 390 engine completely rebuilt. I have driven a few hundred miles and I am looking to change the oil. What kind of oil should I use?

Ughhh. Such a huge debate.

I use Mobil 1 15-50w. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mobil-1-Adva ... ected=true

It contains the ZDDP additive that flat tappet cams require and is trustworthy from Mobil 1. Better yet, it is cheap from Walmart.

However, I have also tried Lucas Oil https://www.walmart.com/ip/Lucas-Oil-Ho ... t/49692050

Either way, they are both great. Just be sure you have zinc in there and try to avoid additives to oil because some don't play nice together.

Since it’s a rebuilt motor I wouldn’t run anything thicker than a 10w-30 because of the tighter bearing tolerances. The topic of oil is a tricky one cause everyone has a different opinion. Bottom line I would run an oil with ZDDP/Zinc. Good choices are Vavoline VR1, PennGrade, or Schaeffer's. Personally I run schaeffer's in my Ram 2500 w/ 6.7l CTD and plan on running their 10w-30 when I finish my 390 rebuild.
