Crankcase seal replacement

Post by Blueford1 »

Hello, Is it possible to replace the front main seal without removing the timing chain cover on the 1970 f100, 302 engine? I have the balancer off and wondering if I can get the seal out from the outside. Thanks.

Can you? Yes. But I wouldn't advise it. Mostly because you really should clean the inner seal mounting surface before installing a new seal and it would be difficult with the cover installed around the crank. You're better off removing it and the water pump and reseling both while you're at it. Might as well replace the water pump and inspect the timing chain and gears while you're there. You'll thank yourself later.
