MAX Tire Diameter with stock 72 F250 4x4? wheel suggestion?

Post by RGB »

Researching this issue indicated that 2WD 1967-72 trucks MAX at 31.5-31.8 inch diameter.

MAX tire diameter for a stock F250 4x4 (rear lift block measures ~4", stock size?)
(sagging in stock leaf springs after ~50yrs, replacement necessary?)

Tire size, brand & version recommended?

Best wheel size for tire availability seems 17x8? Suggestions? Width?

Style wheel, 8 lug, most appropriate for this 1967-72 vintage truck?

Guess a multiple choice to ease the answering?

1. 31.8" OD same as 2WD 67-72.
2. 33" OD
3. 34" OD
4. 35" OD

For reference, 35" OD is close to touching at the forward outer corner of the fender.
Tires are worn out, so its more like 34" at this point. Believe this brand of 35x12.50 were 34.8 when new...
I would say these do NOT fit properly as the suspension has been "enhanced" (attempting positive...) with add-on's to stock springs.

Thanks for any info.

My 72 build card had 7.5x16 on it. Some of the Ford pictures showed these bias ply tires. There’s a deestone 7.5x16 available which is about a 31.8 iirc. I believe the equivalent is 235/85/16 which is 31.8od and maybe 9” wide.

I had 33x12.50 on 16.5 wheels on my old 69 f250 4x4 without any problems. I currently have 285/75/16 witch is about a 32" tire on my 77 f250 "lowboy"

I have 37" hummer take offs on my 67 f250. thou it has an additional 4" lift, over the normal hi boy lift. 4.56 ring and pinion as well.

On my 73 F250 4X4 I ran 900x16 (36" tall, 10.5" wide) tires on the stock 16" split rim wheels. I ran a set of 305R85x16" radial mudders (35.5 tall, 10.5" wide) on AR 767 wheels (16"x 7.5"). Both trucks were stock suspensions and I never had any rubbing issues. The wheel openings may be a little different in the front between the dents and the bumps so your results may vary. I now run 285 75x16" goodyear duratrack's (33 x 11") because Gateway Tire went out of business and they stopped making the 305R85X16" tires. There are still a couple of companies that make 900x16 bias ply mud tires that you can look for if you want tall skinny tires.

When I had my 69 I ran a 34" military tire and had no issues at all. They were tall and skinny, which to me looks most appropriate for these trucks. Also makes them easy to steer if you've got no power steering 8)
