Article 931 - Improper Vehicle Side to Side Attitude or Lean

TSB #49 - November 4, 1966
(1966 Ford Galaxie Models 63 and 76)

Some 1966 Ford Model 63 Fastbacks and Model 76 Convertibles appear to be low or leaning to the right side. This condition is caused by the vehicle being heavy on the right side and, in most cases, is not due to faulty springs.

To determine the degree of lean to one side, measurements should be made in the conventional manner at the fender wheel openings. (See Illustration S1128-A).

To raise the right side of the car approximately 1/2", a B8E-5355-A shim may be installed on top of the right front spring. This rubber coated steel shim is to be installed on the top side of the front spring, in place of the rubber insulator, and will change the level of the car approximately 1/2". To raise the right side of the car 1", it is necessary to install a higher load spring on the right front, selected from the chart in this article. If further correction is necessary, a low load spring must be installed on the left front side, also selected from the chart in this article.

When a new higher load spring is installed, it is not to be used in combination with a shim. This practice will over-compensate in one position and cause the entire front end to raise.

Spring replacement will not be reimbursable unless the removed spring is returned to the Warranty Parts Return Center with a completed 701 tag. When removing the front spring, the lower arm may be released by removing the inner pivot bolt as will be illustrated in the 1967 Ford Shop Manual.

This lean problem has been corrected in production on 1967 vehicles by using a high load spring on the right front side, where required, to produce a level car. In some cases, it is necessary to align the front bumper when bumper misalignment is contributing to the vehicle lean appearance.
