Article 120 - Vehicle Jounce or Vibration

TSB #11 - February 11, 1972
THIS ARTICLE CANCELS AND SUPERSEDES TSB 155, ARTICLE 3192, DATED DECEMBER 11, 1970
(1971 F-250 Camper Special - 6900 and 7500 lb. GVW)

Improvements in components make it unnecessary to use the portion of Article 3192 concerning the new leaf springs. Objectionable vibration in these units between 40-50 MPH can be corrected by bringing the wheel tire runout within the specifications outlined below using the following diagnosis procedure.

NOTE: Refer to the Ford Truck Diagnosis Manual TN-7 thru TN-8 if you need to familiarize yourself with the approved wheel tire rotational corrective procedure for bringing the wheel tire runout within specifications prescribed in this article.

Check wheel and tire runout using procedure outlined as follows:
The total (T.I.R.) runout for the wheel and tire assembly combination is .080 inch.
The radial and lateral runout can be checked with a Rotunda Gauge No. URE-436-386.
A. Radial Runout Check:
    1. Check tire pressure and inflate to recommended pressure, if necessary.
    2. Raise the wheel while it is mounted on vehicle.
    3. Position Rotunda Gauge indicator as shown in Fig. 4, View A. (See Fig. 4, View B for 2-piece wheel.)
    4. Position the dial indicator to zero.
    5. Revolve the wheel slowly and record the maximum dial readings to left and right of the zero point.
    6. Add the two (2) readings.
B. Lateral Runout Check:
Same as radial check except position the Rotunda Gauge as shown in Fig. 4, View A. (See Fig. 4, View B for 2-piece wheel). Record readings in the same manner as item "A".
