Cam for a 300 six
I know this is mostly v-8 on here but I been to the other six cyclinder sites and all I get is a bunch of smart A__ answers, so I'll ask here and maybe someone on here has done this.Has anyone but a bigger cam in there 300 six and if so what kind did you use. I have a 300 six with a offenhauser intake with a 390 cfm holly carb, headers, mallory dist and coil engine has been bored 30 over and manual trans with granny gear. I don't do much with the truck other then drive it to car shows and drive to your local sock hops.I was wanting to have a somewhat aggressive idle but not real aggressive. Please help I have looked and read about cams till I'm total lost and don't have any clue what to get and where to get it. Thanks

This thread has some good info: http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... =3&t=60382

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

That's my nephew's with the Comp 268.gregamorton wrote:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xgYd2u79NU&feature=fvst
Here's mine with a regrind, also referred as an RV2.

Here's another of it with no mufflers to exaggerate the idle sounds.

It may be a choppy idle, but it's certainly easy to live with. The power band at low rpm wasnt lost as a lot of others say. I got my cam for the sole purpose of the choppy idle, and it cost me $135 with the lifters. Didnt change anything else, but the rocker arms were already replaced with ones from a chebby 292.
I daily drive it, and has 2.75 rear gears.

That's just the cam, if you want a cam and lifters, just add a CL in front of the -66-248-4
Trust me, it will make a nice gain in power over the whole range, and you'll be glad you got it. A choppy idling six makes car guys do a double take.
It's important to get a good set of pipes so it sounds right. The green 72 has dual 2.25" from the header back with Flowmasters. Mine has dual 2" that dumps out after a pair of glasspacks.

Re: Cam for a 300 six
I always thought that running dual 2.25s off of the FI manifolds or headers with 2 turbo mufflers on each side would make a six sound like a v8. I think it would make the exhaust deep and take away the raspeness of the six on the top end.

Re: Cam for a 300 six
Yep, that does make a difference, and that's just the point I was trying to make. The green truck with the Comp 268 sounds the best, as far as I'm concerned.

Re: Cam for a 300 six
Ok,I plan out getting the comp 268 cam and lifters,I have a few more question I hope can be answered.1) I have the chevy 250 rockers on it right now do I need to go back to the stock 300 rockers or can I leave the chevy one on.2)I also have a holly 390 cfm carb do I need to rejet that carb or go back to stock setting,I have #40 jets in it now it had #50 when I got it.3)Do I need to replace the valve springs or can I use the stock one, head was all redone about 7000 miles ago.4) what did you set the timing at when you put the new cam in... I think thats about it. Thanks for all your help this is one great SITE compared to a few of the others that I tried to get some info from.....

Re: Cam for a 300 six
1, you can leave the GM rockers on, but it runs the risk of coil bind. A quick web search will show you haw to check it once you get it all together. I used my GM rockers, and it was nowhere near binding, plus gave me .518 lift.
2, Leave it as is, and adjust later when you dial in the timing. May not have to do any jetting at all.
3, you technically should use what the cam says to use. Since these dont rev that high, and yours has new-ish springs, you would probably be ok. Not that I'm telling you what to do. Things can go wrong.
4, I guessed where the timing was until I got it running. I run around 15* initial, and 42* total.
I notice on FTE and ferdsix, they encourage guys to go conservative. I'm almost 40, and usually go with as big of a cam as I can get away with. In my theory, the ports on these are so small, it takes more time to fill up, so a little more duration will certainly help. That, and a long stroke wont hurt lower rpm as bad as it would on something like a 302. I even put a Comp 268 in my dad's 77 Dodge van with a 318.
